Cushion cut
The cushion cut has relatively large facets – this leads to less brilliance than e.g. a brilliant cut, but also to a HIGH LEVEL OF LIGHT DIFFUSION. The result: an EXTRAORDINARY PLAY OF COLORS. The cut is a hybrid of an old mine cut and the modern oval cut.
The history of the cushion cut
The cushion cut is over 200 years old. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it was the most popular cut. Another name for the cushion cut is candlelight cut. The reason: diamonds with a cushion cut sparkle and shine especially beautiful in candlelight.
The cutting standard for the cushion diamond changed remarkably throughout the years. As a result, today's cushion diamonds show more brilliance. Also, the loss of material from the raw diamond is reduced in the new cutting standards.
